Swine-Flu Vaccine:Yay or Nay

If you've followed me for any length of time, you'll know where I stand on certain hot button topics: breastfeeding, circumcision, the current AAP vaccine schedule. I live by this credo: I do not judge what you do with your child so I ask that you kindly shut your opinion-hole on mine.

This week, I mentioned I got the re-enrollment forms for my children's dayhome. Technically, it's a woman who takes care of children in her home, but she is certified by the state of NJ. This means she must be inspected and hold to the NJ laws regarding health, wellness, dietary needs, number of children (no more than 5), outdoor play, etc. This also includes vaccination.

I vaccinated Charlotte according to the AAP guidelines, being a first time mother and listening to my pediatrician whom I trust. But when I became pregnant with Sawyer and when I found out he was a boy who are three-four times more likely to develop Autism (a condition I am not convinced is not affected by vaccination, though I do believe it is not the cause), I did more research. Mike and I talked and talked. We decided he would be vaccinated, but on OUR schedule which mostly follows Dr. Sears' alternative vaccine schedule.

He did not get the Hep B in the hospital as a newborn. He did not get varicella (chicken pox). He never gets more than two shots per visit and never two new ones at a time. If he's due for two new ones or more than two, I will bring him back two weeks apart. Because the MMR is three vaccines in one and loaded with mercury and other toxins, he will not be getting that until he has to enter school.

However, I am firmly of the mindset that you do what you feel is right for your child and I'll do what I feel is right for mine.

Except, here in the state of NJ, the government feels they can dictate to parents what the right thing to do for their child is. They have made certain vaccines like the flu shot mandatory for entrance in any school or daycare. Because my children's dayhome is state licensed, they must meet these requirements. I also trust that our provider has the children's best interests in mind - she has cared for them since they were tiny infants. I know she is only concerned about their safety and well-being.

Charlotte and all of us got the flu shot last year because it was required and there was a small infant in the house. This year, we will all get it as well. I am not thrilled about it, but it's been around for a long time and we've all gotten it without any problem.

The thing that got me was on the state forms to fill out, the words "And Swine Flu Vaccine When Available" were written in. I looked at Mike and said, "I'll quit my job first."

There's no way on this earth that I am giving my infant son or toddler daughter a vaccine that isn't even OUT yet.

In 1976, when the swine flu outbreak in Fort Dix happened, President Ford ordered an immediate call for a vaccine. Within days of the new vaccine being delivered, people were dying. More people died from the vaccine than the flu. I get that this time around, they have learned from that and are not rushing and are doing adequate testing, but if I'm being honest, that doesn't really assuage many of my fears.

The vaccine is expected to be out this October and I'm not sure if NJ will make it a law or if my childcare provider will make it a requirement. But I can tell you this much: I am much more scared of the dangers of a new vaccine than I am of the virus.

It's scary to think that if I don't vaccinate my children against this, that they may in fact get the H1N1 virus and get very sick from it. But if I do get the vaccine, they could suffer from a myriad of reactions, including Guillain-Barre Syndrome and death. They're babies for chrissakes, how can I expect their little immune system to be able to handle such a vaccine?

The scariest part is the fact that it seems I have little choice in the matter: vaccinate my children or keep them home with a babysitter or nanny, rather than in the dayhome provider's house they've grown to love and feel as family.

What about you: what's your take on the H1N1 vaccine and children? or yourself for that matter?

I'm on the fence at this point and will be talking it over with my pedi. at the two littles well vists next week. At this point in time, to be honest, I'm not really sure that the swine flu is that big of a deal (I know, I know). Usually I'm really panicked and paranoid about this sort of thing, but then I realized that pandemic didn't equal Stephen King's "The Stand" so I'm feeling better.

But back to the question, I'm just not sure. We don't have any real prevailing conditions here that would make us be at greater risk. A few minor things, but nothing that would cause me to be concerned about any other strain of flu and so far this one hasn't been markedly worse, IMO.

Not going to do it to my kids or myself. In fact, I am not even sure I want to get the flu shot. I call that one BS too! Last year alone after getting the flu shot I had the flu THREE TIMES including the dreaded stomach flu. We all did. I think the swine flu thing is being over hyped by the media. Any flu can make you sick enough to die...

My husband is a doctor and the the chance of him bringing H1N1 into our house is too great that we will be vaccinating our toddler son. I hate to give him anything that isn't necessary, but if we are protecting him against the seasonal flu, why wouldn't we protect him against H1N1? It seems silly to me to protect against one and not the other. The testing they are implementing for these vaccines are quite varried including different dosing requirements, which will allow vaccine manufacturers to use only the amount required to make the vaccine effective. As well, by doing vaccine trials the scary side effects you mentioned will have already been knows as potential outcomes.

Does your state not allow for "religious" objection to vaccinations? In most states, you can refuse any shots, even for children attending public schools.
There is a form you have to get and fill out.

Some do require specific tenets of religion be cited to use this law. Maybe you can research it and find out. I know wouldn't want to lie about it, but I don't think you should have to have a list of "laws" from your religion to exercise your Constitutional rights. (I'm a Southern Baptist and you know how we love our rules! But for the record,I firmly believe that if I want to worship in the way I see fit, the only way to protect that is to protect the rights of others- I know we get a bad rap)

I hope you can find a loophole. It makes me sick to think about someone injecting my child against my will.

I think it goes without saying that you know where I stand on this issue. No H1N1 vax that is not tested and contains junk. The last time they vaxed with it there were deaths and guilliam barre (I am sure I spelled that wrong). What scares me is that I could just see them totally lining the kids up at school and giving them the jab. To me the vax dangers far outweigh getting the flu!

Eh, I'm not sure at this point. Bubba was VERY sick with the regular flu when he was about a year old, but this was back when they wouldn't let you immunize infants. Since then we've tended to get the flu shots just because I never want to see my kids that sick again (and I know that flu shot doesn't guarantee you won't get flu, but still).

But, I'm pretty sure Bubba's already had H1N1 this year. They didn't test us for it specifically, but the doc was pretty sure that's what it was. And if it was, it was the mildest flu I've EVER seen. now I know the concern is that H1N1 will mutate and none of us will be ready, but I'm just not that worried about it right now. So, I think we'll just wait and see for now.

I'm a teacher, and we've been told that we will be expected to get both the flu and H1N1 vaccination this year, and parents will be "heavily encouraged" to do the same. Having to get it myself makes me feel unsettled...giving it to little ones even more so. Just doesn't sit right.

can i just say- and SORRY if this is totally out of context with your post but i HAD to run over here and say that "The word “mommyblogger” makes me want to throw up my morning mimosa, but I wouldn’t because that would surely be a waste of perfectly fine alcohol on a day I am flying solo with my children." is quite possibly the MOST BRILLIANT COMMENT i have ever seen left on a blog? I think I love you. That is all. Carry on.

crap. i haven't seen anything to mandate my kid to have H1N1 to go to Kindergarten. But I won't be doing it. He hasn't had the flu shot in 2 years (we slid under the 'mandatory' radar last year.)
I think we are on the same page via vaccinations. I, too, and waiting for the MMR for the baby. I even had the Kid tested to see if he was immune - AND HE WAS! So he didn't have to get his 2nd one to go to K! Just his DTaP and Polio. Thank goodness. But, now it just makes me a little angry that they would have just given it to him anyway. *I* was the one who asked for the test, it wasn't offered to me! I may test the baby too when they do the 1 year blood work.
And they better NOT line up my kid in the nurses office and give him some damn shot without my knowledge.

I was extremely displeased to be forced to give my kids the chicken pox vaccine, which is required in the state of MD. Josie always had flu shots b/c of her asthma when she was younger, and I've continued having her and Patrick get them since they didn't affect them at all then, and now the schools are offering the inhaled one for free, so they'll get that. HOWEVER, there will be NO H1N1 vaccine coming into this house. From what I've heard, as long as you're healthy, it's no big deal, and there's no way I'm subjecting anyone to a brand-new shot Just Because. I'd rather a few days of barfing than Who Knows What.

My children will not get the H1N1 vaccine and either will I. We did not get the flu shot lat year and guess what we didn't get sick and my girl was in daycare run pre-K. My husband will be required to get any and all shots required my the militay.

We don't get the flu shot every year, so I don't see any reason to get the H1N1 thing either.

Vaccines are POISON. The only one[s] who benefit from vaccines are PHARMACEUTICALS. Lots of Vitamin D will protect you from the flu and many other diseases. DON'T be fooled by paid off media hype. STOP the sickening assault on humanity.

I would be really leery of getting, or giving to anyone, esp. children, a vaccine that was so new to the public. My grandfather once said, "Don't try anything new; wait and see if anyone dies from it." Those clinical trials are usually run under the sponsorship of the pharmaceutical companies that want to sell the drug ASAP, and the FDA gets paid off and looks the other way (which has been said by the chief of the FDA, on record, twice). The clinical trials often don't include more than 100 people getting the live drug (statistically insignificant), and they are almost always tested only on healthy young-adult males. What does that tell you? It tells you why people were dropping dead from Vioxx, for one thing.

Me, I have never gotten a flu shot, and I have never had the flu. Ever. I haven't had so much as a serious cold in years. I think it's because of the supplements I take, because I sure as hell don't eat right. People can die of ANY flu; the swine flu has actually been less deadly than the "regular" flu, it's just gotten more hype. I wouldn't take the vaccine unless I was forced to.

we dont even do flu shots-- so i hear you on the h1n1. While the threat of the illness is daunting....deliberatly putting it along with other chemicals into myself and my child's body does not make any sense and sounds even worse.

Let's hope they cant "make us" do anything else we strongly dont want to!

My husband and I got the vaccine instead of having our little man get it. He was 18 months old in December, and in my mind, I would much rather have the adults in the family suffer any negative consequences from the vaccine rather than our little guy. He is in a small home day care and I wasn't too worried about him getting the swine flu. As the flu season is ending, I think we made the right choice, and so did you!
