Dimensions

I can't see 3-D.

Remember the guy in Mallrats who stared at the 3-D poster for hours and hours and hours trying to see the sailboat? Yeah, that was me. Back in the 90s when those 3-D books were all over the place, I'd walk by them huffingly, "Who needs to see a stupid sailboat anyway!?" I've failed the tests at the eye doctor where you're supposed to tell them which number is standing out. I just don't see it, but I've never been diagnosed with anything majorly wrong. I just can't see "stereoscopically" and have other depth perception issues on occasion.

This means I won't be taking Charlotte to see Toy Story in 3-D this weekend, Mike will. It will be her first movie and I'm actually really bummed I can't be there with her for that experience, but I'd just be watching a blurry screen. We picked this for her first movie since she has already seen it and likes it. If she does well with this, maybe I'll take her to see her next movie.

---

We're leaving for Disney in two weeks from today. Mike is actually leaving the day before us and driving down. With two small kids and all of our luggage, car seats, strollers, etc., we figured it would be easier to not have to deal with checking it all, getting it all there, renting a van/SUV when we get there. This way, Mike can simply pick us (My mom, I, and the kids are flying) up from the airport with our own car, with the car seats already in it, and our luggage already at the hotel. And we'll save money not checking bags or renting an SUV.

I also didn't do any planning or meal reservations. I realize some of you just gasped and clutched your chests, but my kids are 3 and 1. There's NO WAY that trying to get them to places at certain times and to sit happily through certain meals wouldn't be a huge STRESSFUL disaster, wrought with STRESS and AGONY. So, we're playing most of the trip by ear. We're staying in a brand new resort in a 2-bedroom suite with a full kitchen. I'm hoping we can have breakfast at the hotel, pack lunches, and eat the rest on the go.

I'm not a planner on vacations. I'm just not. It stresses me out, and if I tried to plan for my kids, me being stressed would make them not have a good time, and IT'S THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH, DAMNIT.

This is what happens when your son dumps an entire bag of Goldfish into the shopping cart, all over the aisle in the supermarket and some gets in your Vera Wang purse and you're too lazy/busy to clean it out for days. I'm sorry, Vera.

On the bright side, if I were ever stranded in a life-or-death situation I could have survived on rainbow Goldfish crumbs and lip gloss.

Also, I tweeted this but I'm also fairly certain this is a death threat from my three-year old. This is my scented oil burner.

There's actually two doll heads, one in each end of the burner. Sweet, huh?

I'm not going to go all ass-vicey on you here, because we feel the same way about dining reservations there. But I will say this - if you want to eat at ANY table service restaurant, even just one or two times while there, ask your hotel concierge to help you get reservations.

We figured last time we'd fly by the seat of our pants and we were not able to get in ANYWHERE we wanted to eat, except one place, and we waited well over an hour for a table there.

The good news is that all the counter service choices at WDW are good. Not just typical burgers and fries and nuggets (although that's certainly available too) but seafood, salads and wraps.

You are going to have so much fun! I am so jealous. We are going in two months. I think I'm more excited than Bridget is. It truly is a magical place to take your kids.

My friend went to see the Toy Story in 3D. She said it wasn't really in 3D, only the opening credits were...I have not received confirmation from any other sources, but she's not usually one to lie.

Either way, I definitely plan on going myself because those movies? Are amazing. And I'd love, love to watch them on the big screen!

I'm off to Disney World on Saturday! I am still really bummed that I will be missing you by THHHHIIIISSSS much, since I have declared you to all who know me as my new best friend, the woman who lives my life with more humor and grace than I can manage. I have not told Mila yet - I might tell her Friday...She'll be more excited that she'll be seeing Memaw and Papa, though she does love her Mickey Mouse and the rest. Should I leave you a message somewhere in the park, like a treasure hunt? That could be fun!

totally jealous about Disney, and yes, that is me gasping about NO DINING RESERVATIONS. You're crazy!!!
But, you're also staying offsite so you will survive.
And, I can't believe you don't have a touring plan or anything.
I'm nervous for you.
But, I'll admit, my way of enjoying vacation is obsessively planning every.single.detail and then taking great joy in not following my itinerary.

I'm a BIG planner. Except for vacations. When I go someplace, I research things to do, but don't make a specific game plan. Sort of defeats the purpose of being on vacation. For me, anyway.

Good plan for Mike to drive down ahead of the rest of you. At first, I would think it would be, in the long run, cheaper/comparable to rent a van/SUV compared to what would be spent on gas/tolls, etc. But, add in the pain in the ass factor of car seats, luggage, strollers, etc and driving a vehicle down is WELL worth it.

The bottom of my bag has 3/4 of a bag of Goldfish swimming in a bottle of Victoria's Secret perfume. Somehow, the top sprayer thingie popped off the perfume and I didn't realize it until the smell wafting from the bag damn near knocked me over. Heavenly is a fantastic scent--just not when the bottle has been dumped in the same place. Lucky for me, my bag is a $30 one from Target and not a Vera Wang (hahaha--I said "wang").

I thought about taking my daughter to the Toy Story double feature, but then I realized she can't watch an episode of Ni Hao Kai Lan without walking around, so three hours plus? Not gonna happen.

Hey! I know I tweeted these to you but re: not seeing stereoscopically.... I have done a lot of research into this topic because of B's vision issues (amblyopia). She doesn't see much 3D either... except, these latest Disney movies - she is able to see a bit of the 3D effects so I think the technology they are using relies on both eyes and not the whole red in one and green in the other that it used to be in the past... B definitely doesn't see it like she is supposed to though and I try to take her to the movies where they aren't in 3D.

FYI Disney also has a lot of 3D attactions - just a heads up (Philharmagic in Fantasy Land, the Muppets show in Hollywood Studios, Toy Story Mania ride in Hollywood studios to name a few).

Anyways - back to the Stereo Vision. Check out Stereo Sue and the book Fixing my Gaze (Dr. Susan Barry) - she retought her adult self in her late 40s how to see in stereo. Pretty cool stuff.

Now as for Disney, well you know we love going there and normally its an every other year thing for us but this year we went twice if you count "the girls" trip. Like the other comments have said - if you want a sit down meal where you order and are waited on as opposed to a counter service/quick service meal you really do need some dining reservations. Walk up is nearly impossible in Disney parks. They do have awesome counter service though (especially at Epcot in World Showcase and right now is Food & Wine time which we really love!!)

We like the character meals because it guarantees the kids see characters without having a wait an hour or more - which is the case with the princesses and the main characters (Mickey, Minnie, etc). Even with our abbreviated line pass (due to autism) we've found the character meal was the way to go. I'd probably book one just so you have it and if your day isn't working out you can skip it. The only ones you need to pre-pay or put a credit card hold on are the princess meals but you can cancel those 24 hrs in advance without penalty. Belle's first princess meal she wasn't even 3 yet and she was NUTS to meet all the princesses - we did Epcot and they have princesses at breakfast, lunch and dinner and it wasn't very pricy. It also includes pictures with Belle. Cinderella's castle is super expensive and Belle liked it and all but she told me she actually preferred the princesses in Epcot (I think they are less rushed there in general). You should be able to go online the Disney site and browse for dining availability to see if there are openings during your visit.

We don't really plan our days in Disney out aside from our meals so that if things are too hot or the kids are tired we just go back and do the pool, etc. Just when you get to the park grab the map and the sheet of paper that has the times for parades, and such on it. Definitely check out the "Storytime with Belle" which is over in the grotto behind/to the side of the castle - Belle does a story with the kids and they put on a little play with kids from the audience - I just know Charlotte will do something funny with this!!! Belle got to play "Chip" the teacup last week!! very cute.

Not sure if she is "into" Alice the Wonderland or not, but I did a drop off tea party for Belle that was like $40 and at the grand floridian. I then went and had a glass of wine and sat in QUIET. It was the best hour of my life and she had a blast at the tea party.

Before you go, also go and buy some rain ponchos and tuck them in your day bag. The weather right now is hot but there are a lot of sunshowers so it will pour and then a few minutes later the sun comes out. The parks charge like $8 for a garbage bag poncho when you can get a 2 pack of ponchos at the dollar store here!! Also bring band-aids because if you need them in the park they want like $5 for a teeny tiny box.

HAVE FUN!!!!!!! We are already planning our next trip back.

I think it's an *amazingly* brilliant idea to have him drive down ahead of time. You are a GENIUS! I, personally, have avoided Disney like the freakin' plague because I can't stand the idea of how overwhelming it all is. There's SO MUCH, and it just boggles my mind to the point where I just can't even get a whole sentence out. I can handle Hershey. Off-peak-season.

I also think it's a good idea not to plan meals/make reservations. We are not Planners, either. I mean, even without very little kids anymore, who can tell when you're actually going to be hungry, or too tired, or whatever? Absolutely pack, it's so much healthier and cheaper.
